How much is a vintage Nike windbreaker worth?
A Nike windbreaker is the neck label, the swoosh scale, and whether the coating is peeling. Windrunner is a model name, not every nylon jacket.
A vintage Nike windbreaker is a nylon shell with a hood, a zip, and a swoosh, and the date is the label, not the crinkle of the cloth. The model name Windrunner belongs on the jackets that say it, on the chest, the hem, or the tag. A nylon Nike jacket with no Windrunner mark is still a Nike jacket. It is not that model, and the sold listings are not the same. Early shells carry a small embroidered swoosh. A giant swoosh across the back is a later proportion. Both can be real. They are different searches, and a current windbreaker still has a retail price you can look up before you pay a vintage premium for a recent label.
The label collectors slow down for is a blue woven neck label with an orange swoosh, the early Nike tag. It has to agree with the care label and the country line. A silver or reflective label, and a modern printed label, are later tags. Do not backdate them because the jacket is nylon and blue. The failure that belongs to this object is the coating inside the shell. Old polyurethane on nylon cracks and peels in sheets. That peel is not pilling, and it is not “broken in.” It sticks to a shirt. This page will not quote a jacket. Comp the label you can photograph, in the peel state you can see.
What to look for
- Every label
- Neck label, care label, a separate size label if there is one, and any hem or pocket mark. The blue label with the orange swoosh is one era’s tag. Write down the country line. A missing neck label is a jacket you should not date. Show the hole where the label was.
- Windrunner or not
- Look for the word on the jacket and on the tag. If it is not there, do not add it. Other Nike nylon jackets, including later fashion shells, use the same silhouette. The word is the model. The swoosh alone is the brand.
- Swoosh and cut
- Small embroidered chest swoosh, raglan or set-in sleeve, hood, elastic cuff, drawcord at the hood and hem. A missing cord is incomplete for the person who will wear it. A swoosh that is glued, painted, or sewn on a slant that does not match the other side is a reason to stop.
- The coating
- Turn the jacket inside out. Peeling, chalky, or sticky coating is the condition of old nylon. Photograph the worst panel. A zipper with missing teeth, often a nylon coil, is a repair. Name the zipper brand if it is stamped. A replaced zipper is a replaced zipper.
What moves the price
- Which tag
- The blue-and-orange neck label, a later woven NIKE label, and a current printed label do not share comps. The tag is the sort. Made in USA on an early label is a search. It is not a year by itself, and a USA line on a recent tag is a recent jacket. Read the whole label before you pick a decade.
- Model and swoosh
- Windrunner with a small swoosh is one listing. A big-logo shell is another. Colorway still needs its own sold listings. Navy is common. A less common color is not rare because you like it. Search the color you have.
- Peel, smell, and fit
- A clean shell and a shell that sheds coating are different products. Smell it. A smoke or mildew jacket survives shipping. Measure chest and length, because nylon does not mean one size. A crushed stuff sack is not a measurement.
- Versus new
- Nike still sells windbreakers. If a new one is close to the thrift sticker, you are holding a used jacket with someone else’s peel, not a flip. Older labels can clear that comparison. Recent labels usually do not. Look at the current jacket, then at sold used listings of your tag.
Where to sell
- eBay
- Nike, windbreaker or Windrunner only if the word is on it, the label era in words you can defend, and peeling or not in the title. Photos of the neck label, the swoosh, and the inside. Clothing buyers will open the lining photo first.
- Poshmark and Depop
- Wearable sizes with honest peel photos. Read the current fee. A jacket that sheds white flakes on the buyer’s floor comes back. Describe the coating in the first sentence or do not ship it.
- Wear or pass
- A sound shell under the price of new, label intact, coating still stuck to the nylon, is a reasonable jacket to wear. A peeling reprint of a swoosh on a modern blank is a pass. The label article is the general habit. This page is the nylon.
What a photo can settle
Front and back on a hanger, the neck label flat, the care label and country line, the swoosh close enough to see the stitch, the inside coating, and any missing drawcord. Worth can read Nike from a clear label. It cannot date a jacket from a color, see peel in a photo of only the outside, or know a Windrunner from a jacket that never says the word.
Questions
- Does a blue Nike label mean the jacket is from the 1970s?
- A blue woven label with an orange swoosh is the early tag collectors look for, and it still has to agree with the care label and the country line. It is not one year. A silver or modern printed label is later. Photograph the tag you have and comp that tag.
- What is a Windrunner?
- It is a Nike windbreaker model. The jacket or the tag should say so. A hooded nylon Nike jacket without that word is a Nike windbreaker or a nylon jacket, and that is the honest title. Do not borrow the model name from a different shell.
- The inside is peeling. Can I glue it down?
- No. The coating has failed, and glue makes a worse jacket that still peels. Sell it as peeling, price it as peeling, or wear it until you cannot. A promise that it will “clean up” is a return.
