How much is a vintage band T-shirt worth?

A tour shirt is dated by the print, the tag, and the seams, not by how cracked the ink looks. Most band shirts at thrift are later reprints.

Clothing and bagsThriftingJournal

A band T-shirt is a dated object when the print names a tour, a year, and a list of cities, and the shirt’s construction agrees with that year. Thrift stores are full of band shirts that are later reprints, fashion licenses, or modern shirts washed once to look old. Cracked ink is easy to fake and easy to create in a dryer. It is not a date.

The honest checks are the neck tag, the seam stitch, the print method, and whether the graphic matches a tour that happened. A shirt can be a real 1980s shirt and still be a common one. A shirt can be beautiful and be from 2019. Price follows the specific shirt in sold comps, in a size someone wears, with the flaws shown. This page will not rank bands by money.

What to look for

The tag
Brand, country, and size. Many older shirts have a single-stitch hem and a specific tag (Screen Stars, Hanes, Brockum, Giant, and others). A modern Gildan or a current fashion brand under a “vintage” print is a modern shirt. Photograph the tag flat.
The seams
Single-stitch sleeves and hem are a construction clue associated with older tees. Double needle is later. Single stitch alone, on a shirt with a 2000s copyright, does not time-travel the shirt.
The print
A tour list with a year, a copyright line, and a print that sits in the fabric rather than as a thick new plastisol blob. Compare the graphic with a known tour shirt. Reprints copy the famous images. The tag is how they fail.
Size and holes
Measure chest and length. Pinholes under the arms and a torn neck are condition. A child’s size or an extreme crop changes the buyer. Say if you cropped it.

What moves the price

Specific tour
A named tour and year, confirmed by the print and supported by the tag, is the listing. “Vintage rock tee” is not. Obscure and famous do not sort neatly into expensive and cheap. Comps do.
Reprint versus period
A reprint can be a nice shirt to wear and a bad shirt to sell as old. If you are not sure, say “band shirt, tag reads …, I am not calling a year.” That sentence saves you a return.
Condition
Stains, holes, and a print that is half gone matter. Some buyers want a thin, wrecked shirt. They still want the photos. A pristine reprint and a wrecked original are not the same product.
License
A current official license is a new shirt. It can be good. It is not a 1978 tour shirt. The copyright line at the bottom of the print is there to be read.

Where to sell

eBay
Serious shirt buyers live in sold comps of the exact tour. Include tag, hem stitch, and a flat photo of the print with a ruler. Keyword spam in the title is how you attract a dispute.
Depop and Poshmark
Wearable sizes with clear photos. Describe the tag honestly. The audience includes people who want the look. Do not use their want as permission to upgrade the date.
Pass
A stained reprint in a size you cannot photograph well is not inventory. The time to list it is worth more than the shirt.

What a photo can settle

Flat front, flat back, neck tag, hem stitch close-up, and the copyright line on the print. Worth can read a band name from the graphic. It cannot authenticate a tour year without the tag and the print details in frame, and a cracked graphic alone is not evidence.

Questions

Does a single-stitch hem mean the shirt is from the 1970s?
It means the hem was sewn with one line of stitching, a construction that was common on older shirts and uncommon later. It is a clue, used with the tag and the print. It is not a year by itself.
Are cracked letters a sign of age?
They are a sign the ink has cracked. Washing does that to new prints too. Date the shirt from the tag, the seams, and the tour information, then describe the cracking as condition.
What if the tag is cut out?
Say the tag is cut out. You can still describe the print and the seams. You should not assign a year with the confidence of a tagged shirt. Price it as an unidentified-age shirt.
