How much is a Patagonia Synchilla worth?

The snap-T and the other Synchilla fleeces are common for a reason. The label, the snaps, and the pilling tell you if used beats new.

Patagonia’s Synchilla is polyester fleece, and the snap-T pullover is the one with a short placket of snaps. It has been made for years, in many colors, and thrift stores have it because people actually wear it out. A recent snap-T has a retail price you can check on the maker’s site. A used one is worth buying when it is cheaper than that, in a size you can measure, with pilling and stains you have looked at in daylight.

Older Patagonia labels are a point of interest for some buyers, and a made-in-USA fleece is a different search from a later import. That is a sorting fact, not a promise of money. A stained, bald fleece is a used layer. Comp the same garment, not “Patagonia” as a brand lump. The journal’s note on brands is the longer version of this warning.

What to look for

The garment
Snap-T, full zip, vest, or jacket. The snaps on a snap-T are part of the name. A pullover with no snaps is a different fleece. Read the interior label for the style if it is still there.
The label
Neck label and care label: logo version, country, and size. Earlier labels are a clue to age. A cut-out label means you cannot claim the country or the exact style. Say the label is gone.
The fleece
Hold it to the light. Pilling, thin elbows, and a shiny, felted surface are wear. A small mend can be fine. A hole in the pocket is a hole.
Snaps and zipper
Count the snaps. A missing snap is a repair. A zipper that splits is a repair. Neither is “character.”

What moves the price

Versus new
This is the whole flip, when there is one. If the thrift price plus your time is close to a new snap-T on sale, stop. Buying used is the right move for the wearer and the wrong move for a reseller who needed a rarer object.
Color and size
Common colors in common sizes sell as clothing. Odd tiny or huge sizes sell slower. Measure the chest flat. Fleece stretches, and the tag can be a vanity size.
Era of the label
Some buyers search older label styles specifically. Show the label and let the comp be that label, not a story about the 1990s you cannot support from a lost care tag.
Smell
Fleece holds detergent, smoke, and mildew. Wash it before you promise it is clean. If the smell survives washing, say so or do not ship it.

Where to sell

Poshmark and eBay
Clothing marketplaces. Sold comps for snap-T plus the color, in similar condition. Include a photo of the pilling, not only the logo.
Local
A heavily pilled fleece is a local, cheap sale or a pass. Shipping it across the country to save a buyer four dollars is a hobby.
Wear it
A sound used Synchilla under the price of new is one of the better ordinary thrift buys. The guide for that decision is the buying-used note in the journal.

What a photo can settle

Front and back, the snap placket, the neck label, the care label, and the worst pilling. Worth can identify Patagonia fleece from the label and the garment. It cannot judge whether the price beats new this week, because that number lives on a retail site, not in the pile.

Questions

Is a Synchilla the same as a Retro-X or a Better Sweater?
No. Those are other Patagonia styles, with other materials. Synchilla is the fleece. The snap-T is the pullover with snaps. Use the name on the label.
Are older Patagonia fleeces always worth more?
No. Some label eras have a following, and the sold comps show whether that following is paying. A destroyed old fleece is still destroyed. Compare condition, not just the year you hope the label implies.
Can I remove pilling?
A fabric shaver helps the surface. It does not add fiber back. If the elbow is thin, shaving makes it look neater and does not make it thick. Do not advertise a shaved fleece as unworn.
