How much is karat gold jewelry worth?

10k, 14k, and 18k are stamped claims. A clasp stamp, a plate mark, and a stone you cannot identify are why a chain is not its gram price.

Karat marks are a claim about gold content: 10k, 14k, 18k, 24k, and the European numbers 417, 585, 750. On jewelry the stamp is usually on the clasp, the inside of a band, or the post of an earring. A stamp can be real, worn, or put there by someone who should not have. Plate and gold-filled have their own marks, GF, RGP, and a fraction. Those are not karat gold. The marks guide in the journal walks through the letters. This page is the jewelry decision that follows.

A gold chain’s floor, in a buyer’s market, is related to weight and karat, and that buyer’s number is not a retail price and not a secret. It changes with the metal and with the buyer’s cut, so look it up when you are actually selling, and weigh on a scale you trust. A stone, a maker’s mark, or a piece of antique work can put a jewel above a melt offer, or the stone can be glass and the piece can be damaged. Do not subtract a fantasy stone value, and do not add one.

What to look for

The stamp
10k, 14k, 18k, 585, 750, or a worn stamp you cannot read. Photograph it with a loupe if you have one, or a phone macro. “Looks like gold” is not a stamp. GF and GP are not karat stamps.
Every part
Clasp, chain, and pendant can be different metals. A 14k clasp on a plated chain is a common disappointment. Read each component. If one part is unmarked, say unmarked.
Wear through
Plate wears off at the edges and shows a different color. Solid karat gold wears thin, it does not show a silver or brass base at the high points. A different color at the corner of a “14k” pendant is a reason to stop.
Stones and maker
A maker’s mark next to the karat is a second search. A stone without a laboratory report is a stone you describe by color, not by species, unless you actually know. “Diamond” is a claim. Do not inherit it from a thrift tag.

What moves the price

Karat and weight
The melt conversation uses both. 10k is less gold per gram than 18k. Weight includes stones and a heavy clasp that may not be gold. A buyer who melts will not pay you for the stone. A buyer who wants the jewel might.
Breakage
A broken clasp, a cracked shank, or a missing stone is a repair. Repairs on small gold pieces can cost more than the piece. Say what is broken before you pay a premium to “fix it up.”
Style
A plain chain is closer to a metal price. A signed piece, a specific antique mount, or a complete pair of earrings can be a jewel. Comp the object you have, not the metal alone, and not the jewel you wish it were.
Test, if you must
Acid test and electronic testers exist and can damage a piece or mislead you. If you do not own the skill, do not practice on the only clasp. An unmarked piece you cannot identify is a pass or a question for someone who buys jewelry, not a guess in a listing.

Where to sell

A jewelry buyer
Useful for broken and plain karat gold, if you understand you are hearing a buyer’s number. Get it in writing, and do not let anyone remove stones “to weigh it” out of your sight.
eBay
Better when the piece is intact, marked, and attractive enough that a wearer will pay more than a buyer. Photograph the stamp. Describe chips. Read the fee. Shipping a ring is cheap. Misdescribing it is not.
Do not melt first
Once it is scrap, the maker’s mark and the stone are gone. Identify first. The estate-sale guide is about this instinct: the tag is not the object, and the object is not automatically its metal.

What a photo can settle

The whole piece, then a macro of every stamp, including clasps and earring posts. Show chips at the setting. Worth can read a clear 14k stamp. It cannot weigh the chain or certify a stone, and a yellow color in warm light is not a karat.

Questions

Is 14k real gold?
14k means a claim of 14 parts gold out of 24, a standard karat gold, not pure gold. Pure is 24k and is soft for jewelry. 14k is real gold in that sense, if the stamp is honest and the piece is actually that alloy.
What if there is no stamp?
Then you do not know. Many countries and many old pieces are under-marked or worn smooth. Unmarked is not a synonym for fake, and it is not a synonym for 14k. Do not buy it as gold at a gold price.
Does a magnet tell me it is fake?
A strong magnet stick suggests steel, which gold is not. A piece that does not stick can still be plate, brass, or gold. The magnet is a screen, not a karat test.
